Work with a fast-growing tech startup in Austin, TX

BECOME OWNLOCAL'S FIRST QA ENGINEERING MANAGER

About Us

OwnLocal is a fun-loving and hardworking Austin-area startup with a crazy plan to help local media companies survive in the digital age. We built this fancy tech to automatically generate digital advertising campaigns for their small business advertisers. OwnLocal powers digital services for more than 2,600 local media partners across North America, Europe, and Australia to drive success for local businesses.

We're backed by Y Combinator, 500 Startups, and tons of other awesome SV and ATX investors. We're profitable, cash flow positive, and have found our product market fit.

About You

You possess strong technical and programming skills, and a passion for applying them within a QA context. You have held positions in development, QA, and support. You have built a QA organization and engineering culture from the ground up within an existing development environment. You enjoy sharing your knowledge and expertise with junior personnel and are good at doing so.

You have a knack for defining processes that minimize effort and redundancy while still producing optimal results. You accept accountability for your team’s failures, but give them the credit for their successes. You keep perfection as a constant target, but know what good enough looks like.

Here are some things you'll do every day:

  • Define, document, and socialize QA processes and policies within an Agile development environment
  • Educate developers on writing effective tests, and on best practices for producing testable features and code
  • Determine the correct test approaches for user stories and write appropriate test plans
  • Execute test plans, with an emphasis on automation but a willingness to manually test when necessary
  • Train junior QA engineers on FVT practices and ultimately test automation
  • Conduct one-on-ones with junior QA reports

You should apply if you meet these minimum requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience as a QA engineer
  • 2+ years of experience managing employees
  • Proven ability to define, document, and socialize QA processes and policies
  • Ability to write clear and precise defects and anticipate what information the developer will need to resolve the defect
  • Ability to insist on a high level of software quality from developers and make them grateful you’re doing so
  • Ability to train junior QA engineers, and to participate in hiring if needed
  • Professional experience testing web applications built with a client side JS framework, ideally React/Redux

You should really seriously apply if any of the following applies to you:

  • Ability to think exceptionally at any scope, from the big picture to the tiny details
  • Familiarity with serverless technologies like AWS Lambda and the Serverless JS framework
  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline

About OwnLocal Culture

OwnLocal has a culture of ownership, humor, and mastery. Our team is small enough to allow you to see how your work affects the bottom line and large enough to be stable. We appreciate that work schedules can be personal, but we very much value the time we spend together as a team. You’re an adult and we treat you like one.

We like to experiment. We're proud to make mistakes (but more proud of our successes). We're always improving. One of our least favorite phrases is, “That’s how it’s always been done.” We encourage an inquisitive and curious spirit at OwnLocal, knowing that the only certainty is change.

About Our Developer Team Culture

Our tech is scaling rapidly. Everyone gets to own something. This is an exciting time to solve engineering problems at OwnLocal. We value the ideas and feedback of every engineer on our team. From planning to code review, there are plenty of opportunities to collaborate to ensure the production of software we can all be proud of.

OwnLocal builds applications in Ruby, Golang, and Node. We do original research and development in areas such as natural language processing and computer vision, and we are transitioning our tools to a microservice model using containers.

We pride ourselves on our “no assholes” hiring policy. Our engineering team values collaboration over competition and solving problems rather than blaming people.

We’ve raised money from prestigious investors such as Y-Combinator and Baseline Ventures, but continue to grow over 100% every year out of a cash-flow positive and profitable business—which makes us accountable to our customers, rather than chasing investors.
