Last Wednesday, the OwnLocal team packed up our camping gear, knocked back some breakfast tacos and java, and boarded the bus to our Annual Company Retreat. The retreat is an opportunity for our employees to get to know one another better outside of the office while working together to innovate and brainstorm new ways of improving the company’s mission. We spent three eventful days at Tall Timbers Retreat, just outside of Nacogdoches.

En route to Tall Timbers, the group stopped off at Escape Room BCS in College Station for a little team building. Each team was assigned an escape room challenge—and most of us were able to crack the code just before the 60-minute buzzer! Ahem, most of us.

ownlocal-company-retreat-activities.pngWoo! This team nailed it!

Once we arrived at Tall Timbers, we unfolded our OwnLocal camping chairs (#swag) and jumped into some fun group games, engaging discussions, and productive all-hands sessions. We also divided into cross-departmental teams and kicked off a special three-month project revolving around customer-first solutions.

The rain didn’t stop us from enjoying the fresh forest air! We partook in a little friendly bouncy-house jousting, went into full-on camp mode with a few competitive games of capture the flag, and chowed down on delicious meals catered by the one and only Henri’s Austin.

After sundown we roasted s’mores around a giant bonfire, competed in an epic two-night beer pong tournament, played board games, and of course busted out the adult coloring books.

On our last night at camp, OwnLocal CEO Lloyd Armbrust got all fancy in a tux and presented “The Ownies,” our annual employee awards, in style. Later on, OwnLocal-ers took to the stage to show their chops in the highly-anticipated talent show, which featured ICP rappers, baton twirlers, a seriously talented rock band, and more. We topped it all off with a round of Show & Tell, which included a video of a beatboxing parrot. Enough said.

We’re so glad we had the opportunity to get to know one another better at #CampOwnLocal and are grateful for all the folks that make up this hard-working, hard-playing team. We have yogis, fitness instructors, gymnasts, rock stars, world travelers, readers, writers, bilinguals, bakers, and more. Can’t wait to see what's in store for next year!
